Why Most Nigerian Businesses Run Ads but Don't Get Sales

If you're reading this, chances are you've been there. You set aside money for Facebook or Instagram ads. You create what you think is a compelling post. You hit "Boost Post" or run a proper campaign. The likes start rolling in. Comments too. Your reach shoots up to 50,000, maybe 100,000 people.

But when you check your bank account or your WhatsApp for actual customer inquiries? Almost nothing.

You're not alone. We've spoken to hundreds of Nigerian business owners from Lagos to Abuja, Port Harcourt to Enugu, and the story is always the same: ads that get attention but don't get sales.

Here's the truth: The problem isn't Facebook. It's not Instagram. It's not even your product. The problem is what happens (or doesn't happen) after someone clicks your ad.

The Real Problem: Your Ads Stop at Awareness

Most Nigerian businesses treat ads like they treat flyers. They create something attractive, put it out there, and hope people will just... figure out what to do next.

But here's what actually happens:

Someone sees your ad. They're interested. They click. They land on your page or profile, and then... they're confused. There's no clear next step. No compelling reason to buy right now. No easy way to complete the purchase. So they leave. And they forget about you.

The issue isn't traffic. It's what you're doing with that traffic.

What Most Nigerian Businesses Get Wrong

1. They Send Ad Traffic to Their Homepage or Instagram Profile

Your homepage is not a landing page. Your Instagram bio is not a sales page. When someone clicks your ad because they're interested in "affordable office furniture," they don't want to land on a page that says "Welcome to XYZ Furniture! Explore our wide range of products."

They want to see office furniture. They want to see prices. They want to know how to order. Right now. On that page.

Instead, most businesses make people work to find what they advertised. And guess what? People don't work for it. They leave.

2. They Use the Wrong Campaign Objective

We see this all the time. Businesses run "Engagement" campaigns when they want sales. Or they boost posts and expect phone calls.

Here's the reality: If you tell Facebook your goal is engagement, Facebook will find you people who like and comment—not people who buy. If you tell Facebook your goal is brand awareness, you'll get views—not sales.

Match your objective to your actual goal. Want sales? Use "Conversions" or "Messages." Want calls? Use "Calls." Don't boost posts if you want business results—we explain exactly why in our detailed guide.

3. They Have No Clear Offer or Call-to-Action

"Check us out." "We have the best products." "Contact us for more info."

These are not offers. These are not calls-to-action. These are lazy ways to waste your ad budget.

A good offer is specific: "Order today and get 20% off + free delivery in Lagos." A good call-to-action is clear: "Click to order on WhatsApp now."

If someone has to think about what to do next, they won't do anything.

4. Their Ad Message Doesn't Match the Landing Experience

Your ad says "50% off dresses this weekend only." Someone clicks. They land on your page and... no mention of the discount. No countdown. No sense of urgency. Just a generic "Shop Now" button.

That's called a disconnect. And it kills conversions.

Whatever you promise in the ad, deliver immediately when they click. If your ad mentions a discount, the landing page should scream that discount. If your ad says "free consultation," the landing page should have a form or WhatsApp button for that consultation—front and center.

5. They Ignore Mobile Experience

Over 90% of Nigerians access Facebook and Instagram from their phones. Yet so many businesses send ad traffic to websites that don't work properly on mobile. Slow loading times. Tiny buttons. Forms that are impossible to fill out on a phone screen.

If your mobile experience is bad, you're throwing money away. Test your landing page on your phone. Load it on a slow connection (because that's the reality for most Nigerians). If it takes more than 3 seconds to load or if anything is hard to tap or read, fix it.

What Actually Works: The Proper Ad-to-Sale Funnel

Here's what successful businesses do differently:

Step 1: Match the Ad to the Audience's Awareness Level

Not everyone who sees your ad is ready to buy. Some are just learning about their problem. Some are comparing options. Some are ready to purchase today.

For cold audiences (people who don't know you): Focus on the problem and the solution. Educate first. Example: "Tired of food going bad because of power cuts? Here's how our inverter keeps your fridge running 24/7."

For warm audiences (people who've engaged before): Show proof and push them to act. Example: "Join 500+ Lagos families enjoying uninterrupted power. Order your inverter today and get free installation."

Step 2: Send Traffic to a Dedicated Landing Page or WhatsApp Directly

Stop sending ad traffic to your homepage or Instagram profile.

Option A: Create a simple landing page that matches your ad. One page. One offer. One action. Show the product/service from the ad. State the price. Add testimonials if you have them. Put a big "Order on WhatsApp" button. Learn more about creating high-converting landing pages.

Option B: Use WhatsApp click-to-chat ads. These allow people to message you directly from the ad. The message can even be pre-filled: "Hi, I saw your ad about office furniture. I'd like to place an order."

Both work. Both are better than sending people on a treasure hunt through your website or profile. Want to understand the complete funnel? Check out our guide on how a proper website + ads funnel works.

Step 3: Make the Offer Irresistible and Urgent

Why should someone buy from you? And why should they buy today?

Answer both questions clearly:

  • "Order within 24 hours and get 20% off + free delivery"
  • "Only 10 units left at this price"
  • "First 50 customers get a free gift"

You don't need to be dishonest. But you do need to give people a reason not to procrastinate. Because if they leave to "think about it," they're not coming back.

Step 4: Make Buying Easy

The easier it is to buy, the more people will buy. Simple as that.

  • Use WhatsApp for direct orders (most Nigerians prefer this over filling forms)
  • If using a form, keep it short (name, phone, location—that's it)
  • Accept multiple payment methods (bank transfer, Paystack, Flutterwave, even cash on delivery if possible)
  • Show your process clearly: "How to Order: Click button → Message us on WhatsApp → We confirm details → You pay → We deliver"

Remove every possible point of confusion or friction.

Step 5: Follow Up Fast

Speed matters. When someone messages you from an ad, reply within minutes if possible, or within the hour at minimum.

The longer you wait, the colder they get. The colder they get, the less likely they are to buy.

Set up auto-replies on WhatsApp Business. Let people know you've received their message and will respond shortly. Then actually respond shortly.

A Real Example: Before and After

Before:

  • Campaign objective: Engagement
  • Ad copy: "We sell quality shoes. Check us out!"
  • Destination: Instagram profile
  • Result: 10,000 reach, 200 likes, 50 comments ("How much?" "Do you deliver?"), 2 sales

After:

  • Campaign objective: Messages
  • Ad copy: "Get premium leather shoes delivered to your door in Lagos. ₦15,000 + free delivery. Order now on WhatsApp."
  • Destination: WhatsApp direct link
  • Result: 5,000 reach, 50 likes, 35 WhatsApp messages, 12 sales

Same business. Same budget. Different approach. 6x more sales.

What About Retargeting?

Here's a bonus strategy most Nigerian businesses ignore: retargeting.

Not everyone who clicks your ad will buy immediately. But that doesn't mean they're not interested. Retargeting lets you show ads to people who visited your page or engaged with your content but didn't buy.

These people are warm. They already know you. A simple reminder ad with a special offer can push them over the edge.

Install the Meta Pixel on your website (if you have one) and create retargeting audiences. Run cheaper ads to these warm audiences with offers like "Still thinking about it? Here's 10% off if you order this week."
